Antonio Banderas Endorses SPIDER-MAN Star Tom Holland To Take Over ZORRO Franchise From Him

Antonio Banderas has once again expressed interest in returning for a new Zorro movie. He first played the iconic masked vigilante in 1998's The Mask of Zorro alongside Anthony Hopkins, who played the original Zorro, Don Diego de la Vega, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The actor would return for a 2005 sequel, The Legend of Zorro, though it wasn't as critically or commercially successful as its predecessor.

Since then, the franchise has stalled, though there are a couple of small screen takes in the works. One is a Spanish-led effort set in 1830s Los Angeles starring Miguel Bernardeau, while Robert Rodriguez was said to be developing a female-led reimagining for The CW earlier this year (unfortunately, there's been no word on that one for a while now).

During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Banderas opened up on a potential follow-up.

"Yes, I would, I would consider that possibility, why not?" the Puss in Boots: The Last Wish star said. "If they called me to do ‘Zorro,’ I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch."

"I did ‘Uncharted’ with [Tom Holland], and he’s so energetic and fun," Banderas added. "He’s got this spark, too. Why not?"

That's a great choice, though the likelihood of it happening is hard to say. Holland looks set to have a busy few years ahead of him, with rumours of a new Spider-Man trilogy swirling and Sony no doubt keen to produce an Uncharted sequel sooner rather than later.

Zorro would be a great role for any actor, though it's one that brings a lot of expectations with it. The concept is also something of a hard sell these days, especially in a world where superhero movies rule theaters.

We'll see what happens, but be sure to let us know your thoughts on this news in the comments section.
