There's reportedly a pretty big twist that takes place in director Matthew Vaughn's upcoming spy action comedy thriller, Argylle, but the director is resisting the urge to provide any clues whatsoever. Instead, he's revealing his inspiration for the project, which is a pretty big departure from his usual fare such as Layer Cake and Snatch.
In an interview with io9, Vaughn stated, "It’s a reflection of how taste has changed. It's also more fun and bright. I think the world right now is a pretty miserable planet we’re living on in the moment, so it’s two hours of escapism.”
In the film, Bryce Dallas Howard stars as a spy thriller novelist who gets drawn into real-world espionage when one of the plots of her books bears a striking resemblance to actual clandestine maneuvers being enacted by a secret crime syndicate.
Vaughn has previously stated that Argylle is intended to be the first installment in a trilogy of films.
At this past weekend's NYCC, the X-Men: First Class director also spoke to Collider, where he shared, "So, I just thought 'Kingsman' was to 'Bond' and 'Kick-Ass' to superheroes. What about me doing my sort of Romancing the Stone-style, it’s not an adventure movie, but it’s more spy. But what I realized is we had pure escapism. You know, we’re all in lockdown, the world was a scary place, and for two hours of Romancing the Stone, we’ve all gone on this journey. I went on this journey...I thought I wanted to do a film about escapism, which would be a great date movie at the same time, and do a film that my girls would enjoy, because, you know, they didn’t really like 'Kingsman'. They wanted me to do a softer film, I mean, it’ll still have some moments in it."
Argylle hits North American theaters on February 2, 2024. It will later stream on Apple TV+.
Argylle follows the globetrotting adventures of super-spy Argylle across the U.S., London, and other exotic locations, featuring a star-studded, award-winning cast including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Directed by Matthew Vaughn, Argylle is based on a script written by Jason Fuchs. The film is produced by Cloudy Productions and Vaughn’s regular collaborators Adam Bohling and David Reid, as well as Fuchs. Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres, Claudia Vaughn, and Adam Fishbach serve as executive producers.
