Lionsgate has unveiled the first official trailer for their upcoming John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, following a brief tease yesterday. The film stars Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas in the lead role as Eve Macarro, a young assassin seeking vengeance after a personal tragedy. Trained in the deadly ways of the Ruska Roma, Eve is determined to take down those responsible for destroying her family.
The official synopsis for Ballerina reveals, "Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma." Fans of the John Wick universe will appreciate the rich backstory and connection to the larger franchise, as well as the chance to see another strong female lead in this gritty world of assassins.
The action-packed trailer showcases de Armas in high-octane sequences as she fights her way through various locations across the globe. However, the trailer's biggest highlight comes toward the end, where Keanu Reeves makes an epic cameo, reprising his role as John Wick, also known as Baba Yaga. It appears that Wick will take on a mentorship role for Eve, although the extent of his involvement is still unclear. While we don’t get to see Wick in action, his battered appearance hints that he and Eve may team up later in the film.
Given that Ballerina takes place before the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, fans are left wondering if the movie will drop hints or clues about the potential John Wick: Chapter 5, a long-rumored installment. While nothing is confirmed, there’s hope that Ballerina may offer some insight into the future direction of the franchise.
Alongside Ana de Armas (Knives Out; No Time to Die) and Keanu Reeves (The Matrix; Sonic the Hedgehog 3), the film boasts a stellar supporting cast, including Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family; Prizzi’s Honor), Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects; Miller's Crossing), the late Lance Reddick (John Wick; The Wire), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace; The Affair), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead; Boondock Saints), and Ian McShane (Deadwood; John Wick).
Directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld; Live Free or Die Hard), with a script by Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum; Army of the Dead), Ballerina is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chad Stahelski.
This film marks the second spinoff in the John Wick universe, following The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a prequel series that debuted on Peacock last year. Fans of the franchise eagerly await Ballerina's release to see how it expands the lore of the John Wick universe.
Ballerina hits theaters on June 6, 2025!
