Lionsgate has finally revealed the latest trailer for Ballerina, their high-octane spinoff that gives us an explosive first look at Academy Award nominee Ana de Armas (Knives Out; No Time to Die; Ghosted) stepping into action as Eve Macarro. Her mission appears far more perilous than expected now that she’s poised to face off against Baba Yaga himself.
In a surprising turn shown in the trailer, The Director (Anjelica Huston) dispatches John Wick (Keanu Reeves) to halt Eve’s vendetta. Wick offers her a choice—abandon her pursuit or die—and the confrontation begins. This revelation upends earlier assumptions that Macarro and Wick might join forces. While they still may join ranks eventually, it’s clear the narrative takes an unexpected detour before the credits roll.
According to the official description, “Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro, who is starting her training in the assassin customs of the Ruska Roma.” Since the story sits between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, it will likely fill in some gaps—particularly how Wick recovered after falling off a building at the end of Chapter 3 and came back ready for a trip to Morocco in Chapter 4. Seeing him rejoin the Ruska Roma may also hint at what’s in store if John Wick: Chapter 5 comes to fruition.
In a recent interview, returning star Ian McShane divulged that Eve receives sanctuary at the New York Continental Hotel, though the new preview confirms she’s actually on the run from her own people. We hadn’t known that crucial detail until now.
Beyond de Armas and Reeves (The Matrix; Speed; Sonic the Hedgehog 3), the ensemble features Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family; Prizzi’s Honor), Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects; Miller’s Crossing), the late Lance Reddick (John Wick; The Wire), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace; The Affair), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead; Boondock Saints), Ian McShane (Deadwood; John Wick), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Enola Holmes 2; Dune), and David Castañeda (Poker Face; The Umbrella Academy).
Len Wiseman (Underworld; Live Free or Die Hard) directs Ballerina, working from a screenplay by Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum; Army of the Dead). Producers Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chad Stahelski ensure the series’ trademark blend of intense action and globe-trotting intrigue remains fully intact.
