ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK: Upcoming Movie Is Set To Be A Sequel And NOT A Reboot As Originally Reported

We've known for a while now that Radio Silence is developing a new Escape From New York movie, but the filmmakers have clarified that their take will be a sequel and not a remake as we've previously heard.

Radio Silence, Tyler Gillett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and Chad Villella, are in the process of putting a fresh spin on the Escape From New York franchise, but reports their movie will be a reboot have been proven incorrect.

John Carpenter's 1981 classic starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a soldier-turned-criminal who was tasked with rescuing the United States President. The movie remains beloved, though the sequel - 1996's Escape From L.A. - isn't anywhere near as well-regarded.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly about Scream IV, the filmmakers clarified that they're making a sequel which will continue the Escape From New York story in a similar way to that horror franchise.

"Not a remake," Gillett stated. "That's one of those properties that you can't [remake], it's sort of untouchable to us, and lives in its own stratosphere in terms of how important it is to us, and how much we love it. So it'll be not unlike Scream, I think, a nod to, and a continuation of, what we love about those characters and that world."

Whether this means we can expect to see Russell return to one of his most famous roles is hard to say, but there's always a chance Snake will be recast.

After all, unless this world has moved in real-time, we could return to that same setting with a new actor picking up where the Hollywood legend left off following his last big screen adventure.

Multiple attempts have been made to reboot Escape From New York, with Robert Rodriquez, Leigh Whannell, and Neil Cross among those who have attempted to breathe new life back into the property. With the script not expected to be turned in until next year, it could be a while before we learn what Radio Silence has planned.
