Extraction is shaping up to be yet another huge franchise for Thor star Chris Hemsworth, with the actor set to make his return as lethal mercenary Tyler Rake in a sequel next June.
Like the first instalment, that will premiere on Netflix, picking up with the badass former soldier as he looks to break into an impenetrable prison in an effort to rescue the family of a merciless Georgian gangster. Along the way, we'll learn more about Rake's past, but both Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave set out to really up the ante in terms of action.
"There's something so satisfying about that," Hemsworth tells Entertainment Weekly of a fight scene set in a snowy prison yard with more than 300 extras. "Not to take anything away from the special-effects-filled sort of Marvel film, but you have a lot of help in post-production there."
"Obviously, I can't fly, so they help through me that. Whereas in this film, the action is grounded in reality, and so much of it is in camera. So, it's a different energy, and the preparation is a lot more extensive."
The Extraction sequel won't be too grounded, though, as it will also feature a sequence with a helicopter landing on a moving train...all while Rake squares off against a squad of formidable goons, of course. That took months to perfect, but for Hemsworth, it was all worth it in the end.
"Probably the most intense part was not so much the exhaustion levels," the actor explains, "but just the sheer terror of all the things that could have gone wrong, but thankfully didn't."
We can't wait to see more from Extraction 2 ahead of its release next June, but for now, a badass new look at Tyler Rake can be seen in the still below.
