Deadline is reporting that Miramax's The Beekeeper, an upcoming action film starring Jason Statham (Furious 7; Hobbs & Shaw), has found its director in David Ayer (Suicide Squad; End of Watch).
The film was written by Kurt Wimmer (Salt; Law Abiding Citizen) and heavily explores the mythology of beekeeping, while following a man’s (Statham) personal journey of vengeance which takes on national stakes. Further details are currently unknown.
The spec script was acquired by Miramax last year in a seven-figure deal and with Ayer now joining the project, they'll attempt to sell the film to a distributor during Cannes later this month.
Statham has Guy Ritchie's Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre due out later this year and recently wrapped The Expendables 4, which revealed its first look at CinemaCon last month. He's currently filming Meg 2: The Trench for Warner Bros. and is expected to return as Deckard Shaw in Universal's upcoming Fast X, which recently landed a new director.
Ayer, who once penned the Denzel Washington/Ethan Hawke crime thriller Training Day, is best known for helming 2016's Suicide Squad, which starred Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie. His past directing credits also include Keanu Reeves' Street Kings, the Jake Gyllenhaal/Michael Peña-starrer End of Watch, Arnold Schwarzenegger's Sabotage, the Brad Pitt-fronted Fury, the Will Smith/Joel Edgerton-headliner Bright, and Shia LaBeouf's The Tax Collector.
