Sony Pictures has released the first trailer and poster for Gran Turismo (via GameFragger.com), the studio's upcoming big screen take on the beloved PlayStation racing franchise.
Offering a better idea of what to expect from the movie that stars Archie Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, and David Harbour, it looks like an exciting, inspiring ride and one we're sure will make fans of the long-running video game series happy. Need for Speed struggled to find an audience back in 2014, so here's hoping it manages to fare a little better than that, anyway.
There are many directions Sony could have taken Gran Turismo in, but a legit racing movie feels like a better fit than crazy, over-the-top Fast & Furious-style action.
"Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough," reads the synopsis, "the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver."
Neill Blomkamp (District 9) directs Gran Turismo from a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. Joining Madekwe, Harbour, and Bloom in the movie are Darren Barnet, Djimon Hounsou, and Geri Halliwell Horner.
The latter may be best known to many of you as Spice Girls' Ginger Spice, though she's actually married to Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner. She knows her way around a Formula 1 track, so we're definitely intrigued to see what the singer and actress ends up bringing to the table here.
Gran Turismo is one of many video game adaptations heading our way from Sony, with God of War, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and Twisted Metal among those on the way.
Gran Turismo is set to be released in theaters on August 11.
