Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in theaters this weekend, marking the fifth and possibly final film in the franchise starring Harrison Ford. While this adventure is likely one you'll want to catch on the big screen, it's understandable that in a post-Covid world, many simply prefer to watch new releases from the comfort of their homes. Unfortunately, you'll likely have to wait a while before you get the opportunity to do so.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is only showing exclusively in theaters right now and will remain there for at least the next couple of months. Disney hasn't announced when the film will come to streaming, but based on the company's recent trends, we can probably expect to wait between 60 and 90 days. For a bit of comparison, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever came to Disney+ after 82 days in theaters, while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania came to the service after 89 days.
With this being Ford's last hurrah as the famed archaeologist and Disney's renewed emphasis on box office results, it's possible that the film stays in theaters a bit longer than other recent Disney films. Of course, that'll depend on how audiences respond to the movie. After racking up $7.2 million in Thursday previews, the fifth film in the franchise is tracking to open to $65 million, or possibly more over the holiday weekend.
Assuming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny performs similar to recent Marvel movies and Disney waits the 90-or-so days, then we can expect the movie to arrive on Disney+ at the end of September, or in October. It should release digitally for rent or purchase on VOD (Amazon, Apple TV, Vudu, etc.) shortly before that.
If you want a refresher on the adventures of Indy, you can catch all four movies on Disney+ as well as on Paramount+. This has sparked some confusion as to whether Dial of Destiny will also stream on Paramount+. That's unlikely though. The first four movies in the franchise were distributed by Paramount Pictures, before Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm which transferred film rights for future sequels. While Paramount still retains distribution rights to the first four movies in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm Ltd. and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, so it's likely to only come to Disney+ for streaming.
