A few years ago, it was starting to look like Indiana Jones 5 wasn't ever going to happen. For some, that came as a relief after 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the disappointing movie that brought Harrison Ford back to one of his most iconic roles after a 19-year absence.
Director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas were plotting out story ideas prior to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, with the former officially announced as Indiana Jones 5's helmer in 2016. Set for release in 2019, it was pushed to 2021 before Spielberg walked away from the project, agreeing to hand control of the iconic character to a new filmmaker.
With that, Logan director James Mangold was tapped by Lucasfilm to take the helm of the project. Since then, the movie has been mostly kept under wraps, though that chance recently with the release of an Indy-centric issue of Empire Magazine.
Now, Disney has officially released a full gallery of stills from Indiana Jones 5.
A few will be familiar to you, though we can now share them without any pesky watermarks. The descriptions confirm some character names too, with Shaunette Renée Wilson as Agent Mason and Toby Jones as Basil. We also learn that the young Indy is facing off with Mads Mikkelsen's Nazi villain Doctor Jürgen Voller in the opening flashback.
That would explain why he has such an issue with Voller's reemergence in 1969, and his right-hand man, Boyd Holbrook's Klaber, looks suitably formidable here.
We also have some new shots of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as his goddaughter Helena. Rumour has it the franchise could continue with her character as the focal point, though we'd guess that will very much hinge on how fans respond to the character next year.
Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
