Despite the fact he's only played the character across 20 episodes of television, Detective John Luther remains one of Idris Elba's most famous roles. Talks of a movie have persisted for years, but it's finally happening later this year with Netflix's Luther: The Fallen Sun.
Series creator Neil Cross penned the screenplay, while Jamie Payne - who directed the show's fifth season - is at the helm.
The movie picks up where that ended, and a deadly new serial killer has begun plaguing London. There's no mystery surrounding their identity, though, as Total Film confirms that it's millionaire David Robey, played by The Lord of the Rings and Andor star Andy Serkis.
Using the dark web to spy on his victims, Robey promises to be more than a match for Luther, and we have a first look at the sinister villain below (along with the bloodied Detective).
Talking to the magazine, Elba weighed in on Luther's franchise potential beyond this first movie. "One hundred per cent, it is a franchise," he says. "We’re desperate to take Luther out of Luther-land, and put him in the big world. I think that’s a really important characteristic of scale and growth in our films."
"I mean, can you just imagine John in Colombia, or darkest Berlin where it’s really weird and underground? Luther could go to America if we want to do that. That, to me, is exciting," the actor continues. "And taking the rules of Luther-land and transposing them to different environments is really exciting for us."
