Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Whale) is back in the director's seat, but this time he's helming a more action-oriented pic, in Sony's Caught Stealing.
The film is already being compared to Snatch and Layer Cake for its gritty tone and darkly comedic crime elements.
Austin Butler plays a former high school baseball star whose promising career fell apart before he ever went pro. His life takes a chaotic and dangerous turn when he agrees to watch his punk rock neighbor’s cat, only to be mistaken for the neighbor by some very dangerous people.
Butler is joined by an impressive cast, including Regina King (Watchmen, The Boondocks), Zoë Kravitz (The Batman), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Griffin Dunne (War Machine), musicians Bad Bunny and Action Bronson, Tenoch Huerta (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and Carol Kane (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds).
The film is based on a novel by comic book writer and author Charlie Huston, who also wrote the screenplay.
If Caught Stealing does well at the box office, more films are likely on the way, as Huston’s story is the first in a full trilogy following Butler’s character through even more wild and violent misadventures.
Caught Stealing is slated to hit theaters in the United States on August 29, 2025
