FX’s Sons of Anarchy stands as one of modern television's most iconic dramas, notorious for its complete lack of hesitation when it came to killing off fan-favorite characters.
So when rumors of a reunion series started making the rounds, fans were understandably stumped. How do you pull off a sequel when half the core cast is six feet under?
Rather than retconning the bloody series finale or attempting a messy resurrection, star Charlie Hunnam is leading a meta limited series that reunites the original ensemble in an entirely different way.
Titled Legends, the project throws out standard revival tropes.
The official plot description for the series reads, "When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”
Alongside Hunnam, the returning lineup features Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi.
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” said Nick Grad, FX Entertainment president via a press statement.
“Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
If the show's unusual premise sounds familiar, you've likely watched Tim Allen's Galaxy Quest, which sees the washed-up cast of a canceled 1990s sci-fi TV series mistaken for real space heroes by desperate aliens.
When they're thrust into actual interstellar warfare, the actors must rely on their fictional roles to survive and save the day.
It's unclear if there's a sci-fi twist here with Legends, but there is the part from the official description where the cast faces a real-world threat more dangerous than anything previously seen on the show...it makes us start to wonder.
Original Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter took to social media to quickly reveal that he has no involvement with the show, stating: "I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be."
He continued, "It has nothing to do with the characters I created or the mythology. It is really about the show and the legacy of the show, and quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy."
"I just want folks to know that Charlie came to me early on, when he was in the process of pitching this to the network, to ask for my blessing, knowing that the IP would probably not be able to be invoked for various reasons of legalese stuff, and I gave Charlie my full blessing."
