THE GRAY MAN: Russo Brothers On Taking AVENGERS Star Chris Evans From America's Ass To America's Asshole

The Gray Man co-director Joe Russo has shed some light on casting Chris Evans as the movie's lead villain, explaining how they transformed America's Ass into America's Asshole. Read on for further details!

Last week, news broke that there are already plans in place for The Gray Man to get a sequel and prequel at Netflix. The latter will star Chris Evans and tell the origin story of his villain, Lloyd Hansen.

After a lengthy stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing Captain America, Evans is understandably looking to move on to different roles. Knives Out was a good indication of that, of course, and it sounds a lot like the actor is now having fun exploring roles a little less virtuous than Steve Rogers.

Talking to Den of Geek, the Russos talked about transforming America's Ass into America's Asshole.

"We didn’t have to sell Chris on the role; Chris sold us, in a way," Joe tells the site when asked how they enlisted the former superhero. "We were talking to him as we were wrapping up Infinity War and then Avengers: Endgame about what’s next for him or where he wanted to go in his career, and he said, ‘You know what? I’m comfortable enough in my life and the work I’ve done that I’m just interested in taking risks moving forward, and I just want to play challenging characters.'"

"So it seemed obvious to us that the right move here would be to offer Chris the sociopath and not the hero." Ryan Gosling will play The Gray Man's hero, of course, so Evans will have a formidable foe.

We're excited to see what Evans does with this role, and while many comic book fans remain hopeful he'll reprise the role of Captain America, it's definitely fun to see the actor take some risks.

The Gray Man is set to premiere on Netflix on July 22.
