There was always a lot of excitement surrounding Top Gun: Maverick prior to its release, but no one could have anticipated the blockbuster being the biggest movie of 2022.
With a whopping $1.47 billion worldwide, the Tom Cruise-led feel-good action romp has outpaced any and every superhero movie in 2022 and has been a hit with critics and audience members alike. In North America, box office experts believe not even Avatar: The Way of Water will manage to shoot down the records set by the Top Gun sequel this year.
Alas, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has now come along to spoil our fun!
Taking to social media, he pointed out that there's no way Maverick could have survived being ejected from his jet at 7000mph because being propelled out at "400 million joules of kinetic energy" is "a situation that human physiology is not designed to survive."
He's probably on to something there, but Top Gun: Maverick fans haven't appreciated this particular piece of fact-checking. Tyson is often dubbed a buzzkill for pointing out factual or scientific inconsistencies in movies, but we're sure he doesn't mean anything by it!
Regardless, you can see Tyson's Tweets along with the reaction from fans (and other experts!) below:
