Fresh off the success of Top Gun: Maverick, director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) has a number of exciting proejcts in the works.
There's his upcoming, Untitled UFO Thriller for Apple TV which is generating tons of buzz but there's another iconic '80s action IP that the F1: The Movie helmer is looking to sink his teeth into - a reboot of the fan favorite Miami Vice TV series, which originally aired from September 16, 1984, to 1989.
And what's generating even more buzz is the rumor that Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are currently in deep negotiatons to star as Crockett and Tubs.
Well, at the the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards, Kosinski confirmed those rumors to Variety.
"Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, [and] always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch. Again, I’ve just have really admired his choices,” said Kosinksi when asked about the rumored casting. “If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.”
The director also confirmed that his film will be set during the '80s, unlike the contemporary 2006 reimagining from Michael Mann, which starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
"Well, the film takes place in 1985. So, it's full-on, it's full-on. Maybe even the crew might have to participate as well. On Top Gun, we had something called Flight Suit Fridays. So if it all goes ahead, maybe we'll have an '80s Friday, as well."
The Miami Vice reboot is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on August 6, 2027. Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) are co-writing the script. It was previously reported that the film will take its ques from the pilot episode of the original TV show.
Similar to Top Gun and F1, the film is being developed specifically for the IMAX format.
The original Miami Vice show followed two undercover detectives, James "Sonny" Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas), who are partnered together in the Metro-Dade Police Department's Vice Squad in Miami, Florida.
They worked undercover to infiltrate and take down the city's vast criminal underwold, focusing on drug cartels, arms delaers, and sex traffickers.
