The John Wick franchise crossed $1 billion worldwide across four films, and Lionsgate has kept expanding the universe ever since.
Four projects are in motion right now, and none of them has a release date. Here's where each one stands.
Donnie Yen wrapped principal photography in mid-July, announcing it himself on Instagram with a clapboard photo. He's directing as well as starring, returning as the blind assassin who stole a chunk of Chapter 4.
The shoot started in Europe in April 2026 and ran through Hong Kong into late June. Rina Sawayama returns as Akira, joined by Mason Thames, Dacre Montgomery and Bill Nighy. Mattson Tomlin and Michael McGrale wrote it, picking Caine up after Chapter 4 as he tries to get out from under the High Table. Lionsgate has reportedly been aiming at some point before the end of 2027, and that's as specific as it gets. No announced release date exists, and anybody telling you otherwise is guessing.
John Wick Chapter 5 became official at CinemaCon in April 2025, with Keanu Reeves returning and Chad Stahelski back in the chair. It's still in early development, and Lionsgate is reportedly running Caine and the animated film ahead of it. Talk has pointed at a 2027 or 2028 release window, with no studio commitment behind it, partly because Stahelski has a Highlander film of his own to get through first.
Lionsgate's Adam Fogelson set the bar high for it at CinemaCon, saying Reeves, Stahelski and the producers "would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say."
The animated prequel is the one flying under the radar. Shannon Tindle, who made Ultraman: Rising, is directing from a Vanessa Taylor screenplay, with Stahelski producing. It covers the Impossible Task, the mythic night of kills Wick had to pull off to buy his way out and get back to Helen. And it's R-rated, so the franchise isn't being softened for a wider audience.
Reeves is producing that one and is widely expected to voice Wick, but Lionsgate hasn't confirmed that he's signed on for it. A lot of coverage has already promoted "expected" into "confirmed." Animation moves slowly too, so this could easily be the longest wait of the four despite being announced the same week as Chapter 5.
Then there's the one that already happened. Ballerina put Ana de Armas in the world in June 2025 and finished with $140 million theatrically against a reported $90 million budget, which after marketing means it didn't turn a theatrical profit. It has done considerably better since hitting streaming.
Ballerina is the first hard evidence of whether this world travels without Keanu Reeves in the middle of it, or not. Caine is the second attempt, and it's already completed shooting.
The Continental, the three-part Peacock prequel about a young Winston Scott, landed with a shrug in 2023 and never got a second season. There's one more show in the works, a sequel series called Under the High Table set after Chapter 4 with Reeves and Stahelski producing, but it has been in development since 2024 with no network attached and no greenlight, so it doesn't have a schedule yet.
So far expanding this world has worked on film and stalled on television…
