Last year, we learned that Man of Steel and The Witcher star Henry Cavill was in early talks to star in a new Highlander movie. The franchise has been on the shelf for a long time now, but the likes of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible - Fallout have proven the British actor has serious action star credentials.
John Wick director Chad Stahelski is expected to helm the movie that will be a modern retelling of Connor MacLeod's centuries-old feud with his fellow powerful immortals. They're fighting to the death in an effort to absorb each other's powers because, and we're sure the concept will be familiar to you even if you haven't watched the 1986 original, as there can be "only one."
"We're in the process of tweaking right now. I think we know what we want," Stahelski said of the new Highlander script. "More importantly than anything, we know what we want to make. It's in the creatives. We know what we're trying to make. It's just a matter of getting it to the point where we feel, 'Okay, this is it. Let's go.' But we're closer than we've ever been, so that's good."
As for whether Cavill is still attached to star, the filmmaker would only say that the actor is "one of my big choices." He went on to add, "It's not just about muscles and brooding. I think he's got an incredible range and I think he'd bring something very special. And his enthusiasm has been amazing in it."
So, while nothing is set in stone, it does sound like Highlander is heading in the right direction.
Cavill remains busy with The Witcher, and while it's unlikely he'll return as Superman, playing the Highlander could be an awesome role for him, especially with Stahelski's own action experience likely to help take that side of things to the next level. With any luck, the project will now start coming together at a quicker pace as it's a property worth revisiting.
What do you think about Cavill potentially starring in the Highlander reboot?
