Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hasn't been the box office blockbuster Disney hoped it'd be, but the film has reached a critical milestone at the box office that could put some minds at ease. The fifth installment in the long-running franchise has finally surpassed $300 million at the global box office. According to Box Office Mojo, its worldwide tally sits at $302.3M.
That's an important figure as it's estimated that the film cost $300 million to be made. Some sites are claiming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has now broken even, but that may not exactly be true. For starters, Disney does not keep all of the revenue from ticket sales as it's generally just a percentage split with the theaters.
Additionally, the $300 production budget does not include marketing costs. It's estimated that advertising added an additional $100 to $200 million.
So while the $300M that Indiana Jones has made so far is quite a feat given the film's lackluster opening weekend, it's still far from breaking even for Disney, let alone making a profit.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the fifth and presumably final installment of the beloved adventure series starring Harrison Ford as the famed professor of archaeology. It's a role that Ford originated starting back in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Now five decades later, Ford is ready to bid farewell to the iconic fedora and bullwhip.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny currently sits at 68% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics but a much more impressive 88% audience score. The critics' consensus reads: "It isn't as thrilling as earlier adventures, but the nostalgic rush of seeing Harrison Ford back in action helps Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny find a few final bits of cinematic treasure."
Disney has not announced when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will head to Disney+ for streaming, but it's quite possible the company will want to keep it in theaters for as long as possible. Many predict the movie will make its way to the streaming service later this year.
