The underrated Walton Goggins (Fallout, Justified) has joined the impressive cast of Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Sinners) and Austin Butler's (Elvis, Dune: Part Two) in Miami Vice ’85.
Other recent cast additions include John Leguizamo (The Odyssey), Andrew Schulz (Street Fighter) and Edi Gathegi (Superman, Man of Tomorrow).
Goggins is said to be portraying an assassin for Leguizamo's cartel kingpin.
The full cast also features Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Weapons), Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping), Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & The Six, The Night Manager), and Danny Ramirez (Captain America: Brave New World, Avengers: Doomsday).
Most of the cast currently has undisclosed roles, but Morrone and Peak are said to be portraying the love interest for Jordan's Tubbs and Butler's Crockett, respectively.
Filming is slated to start in November, and the production will film on location in New York and Miami.
Jordan and director Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, Oblivion) were attached to the project first, with Butler signing on later. He reportedly fell in love with the role and aggressively pursued it, while previous reports had Universal eyeing Glen Powell for the part. His pitch was reportedly very successful, which led to Jordan then lobbying for Universal to go with Butler over Powell.
It was first confirmed that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) would be helming the project back in November 2025.
On working with Jordan and Butler, he stated, "Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, [and] always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch. Again, I’ve just have really admired his choices."
The Miami Vice reboot is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on May 19, 2028. Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) are co-writing the script. It was previously reported that the film will take its cues from the pilot episode of the original TV show.
Similar to Top Gun and F1, the film is being developed specifically for the IMAX format.
The original Miami Vice show followed two undercover detectives, James "Sonny" Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas), who are partnered together in the Metro-Dade Police Department's Vice Squad in Miami, Florida.
They worked undercover to infiltrate and take down the city's vast criminal underworld, focusing on drug cartels, arms dealers, and sex traffickers.
