The cast of Miami Vice '85 continues to round out as Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & The Six, The Night Manager) becomes the latest actress to join the project.
She boards a sequel/reboot project that will see Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Sinners) and Austin Butler (Elvis, Dune: Part Two) star as Crockett and Tubbs.
Other confirmed cast members include Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Weapons) and Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping).
Peak is said to be portraying the love interest of Michael B. Jordan's character, Tubbs. There's speculation that she could be portraying Valerie Gordon, the most prominent and enduring of Tubbs' many love interests in the original TV show. The character was previously played by the iconic, Pam Grier.
No specific character details have been revealed about Ehrenreich and Morrone's roles.
Jordan and Kosinski were attached to the project first, with Butler signing on later. He reportedly fell in love with the role and aggressively pursued it, while previous reports had Universal eyeing Glen Powell for the part. His pitch was reportedly very successful, which led to Jordan then lobbying for Universal to go with Butler over Powell.
It was first confirmed that Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) would be helming the project back in November 2025.
On working with Jordan and Butler, he stated, "Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, [and] always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch. Again, I’ve just have really admired his choices."
The Miami Vice reboot is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on May 19, 2028. Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) are co-writing the script. It was previously reported that the film will take its cues from the pilot episode of the original TV show.
Similar to Top Gun and F1, the film is being developed specifically for the IMAX format.
The original Miami Vice show followed two undercover detectives, James "Sonny" Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas), who are partnered together in the Metro-Dade Police Department's Vice Squad in Miami, Florida.
They worked undercover to infiltrate and take down the city's vast criminal underworld, focusing on drug cartels, arms dealers, and sex traffickers.
