The Gray Man is Netflix's most expensive movie to date with a whopping $200 million budget, but it appears to have been money well spent for the streaming service.
Why? Well, it's been confirmed today that Netflix is expanding the franchise with a sequel and spinoff, which are both said to be in active development. Stephen McFeely (Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: Civil War) is penning the former's screenplay, with Joe and Anthony Russo set to direct.
As you might expect, Ryan Gosling will return to star as the titular Gray Man.
"The audience reaction to 'The Gray Man' has been nothing short of phenomenal. We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film," the Russo Brothers said in a joint statement.
"With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for 'The Gray Man' to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon."
That second script, a spinoff, is being written by Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. All we know right now is that it will explore a different side of this spy world.
"With 'The Gray Man,' the Russos delivered an edge-of-your-seat spectacle that audiences around the world are loving," Netflix’s head of global film Scott Stuber added today. "We’re excited to continue to partner with them and the team at AGBO as they build out 'The Gray Man' universe."
Reviews for the movie were a little middling, but it's clearly been a hit and that's what matters to Netflix. The streamer never releases viewing figures, but we'd imagine they'll tout some impressive numbers down the line. We'd guess this is why the Russos aren't returning to helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
