Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was released in 2019, with the response to this first spin-off from fans of the franchise a positive one. Throw in the fact that the movie made a massive $760 million worldwide, and it's a little baffling to think we still haven't heard about any possible sequel plans.
While far-fetched in place, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham's rapport in the movie was a blast, with Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw proving to be an unexpected dream team. A post-credits scene, meanwhile. teased another team-up.
Talking to ComicBook.com, Hobbs & Shaw producer Kelly McCormick confirmed there are currently no plans for a follow-up, suggesting Johnson's busy schedule is at least partly to blame.
"We would love to, there's no conversations at this time. I do feel like there were a lot of seeds planted to try to create a spinoff in a way that included a Kevin Hart and a Ryan Reynolds and sort of all that kind of stuff. And that was intentional, but not necessarily because we had plans in mind, just because it would be fun to have different players for them to play with, if anybody or we wanted to go for it in a different way."
"So, you know, I don't know, I mean Dwayne's a really busy guy and you know, he would be the one to motivate all of that. So, you know, we're ready if he wants to and until then he's just dominating so all power to him."
Johnson is widely credited with saving the Fast & Furious franchise thanks to his appearance in the fifth instalment, but has since had a very public falling out with Vin Diesel and either cast members. While his spin-off was a hit, it didn't do Fast & Furious numbers, and we can't help but wonder if that knock to The Rock's ego is why he's in no rush to come back for more.
Reynolds' Locke and Hart's Air Marshal Dinkley teaming up in their own movie might be fun, though it does feel like a stretch. Putting all four characters in one movie, however, could result in a $1 billion hit.
