Ahead of the season five premiere of Yellowstone, the official 1923 social media channel dropped a couple of promotional images of the upcoming spin-off prequel series, 1923. Set to debut next month, 1923 will transport fans to the early twentieth century and follow a new generation Dutton family — one led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
The Instagram post caption reads: "Meet Jacob and Cara Dutton." Check out the photos below.
In addition to the photos, Vanity Fair had a much more in-depth write-up that offered more details for both characters.
“He’s the silverback,” Ford said of his character, Jacob Dutton. “He’s responsible for that branch of the family. These are two people with a very strong bond to each other who are facing really complicated circumstances.”
Cara Dutton, an Irish immigrant, is equally strong and wise. Together, they are a force to be reckoned with, unafraid to stand up for what they want.
“You need someone who is capable of making decisions, and hopefully making the right decisions, but at least making a decision and going with it—in other words, a leader,” Mirren said. “That’s what has propelled them into this position of running the ranch, running the family, being the linchpin around whom, at this moment in time, the family revolves.”
Jacob and Cara have been married for about four decades, but have no children. "Their lives are totally wrapped up in each other," Ford revealed. “There’s very little that sustains them other than themselves and the hard work and investment they put into their future and their family. It is a tough life, and it’s full of not just physical challenges but moral ones as well.”
Moral quandary is the name of the game when it comes to Yellowstone and anyone familiar with the Duttons knows that they aren't afraid to bend or break a few rules to get what they want. The Duttons are all about family and protecting their legacy and the land that they own. How they achieve these goals is sometimes questionable — but we always know where their actions stem from.
“The Duttons live by a code of behavior that they set for themselves and it requires complicated moral and ethical judgment,” Ford explained. “It’s not just the physical life that’s hard. The challenges that they face from modernity, the challenges to their way of life, to their freedom and the opportunities that they’ve enjoyed, is a big part of the story. The upcoming Depression and all of the pressures, economic and social, are leading up to this very volatile time in American history.”
Cast alongside Ford and Mirren are Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Jacob's nephew; Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, John Dutton Sr.'s son; Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford, a capable young woman set to marry into the Dutton family; James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr., the oldest nephew and right-hand man of Jacob; Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton, John Dutton Sr.'s dutiful wife; Brian Geraghty as Zane, a loyal ranch foreman; Aminah Nieves Teonna Rainwater, a young woman at a government resident boarding school; Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, a British woman; and Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton.
1923 is set to debut on Paramount+ on Sunday, December 18. Although it's a limited series, it's believed that 1923 will consist of two, 10-episode seasons.
