Taylor Sheridan's highly anticipated Yellowstone prequel series, 1923, is set to debut on Sunday, December 18, exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada. It will premiere the following day on December 19 on Paramount+ in the UK and Australia.
As the title suggests, the upcoming limited series will follow a new generation Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana, and "will explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home."
The family is led by Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton. They are joined by Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Jacob's nephew; Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, John Dutton Sr.'s son; Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford, a capable young woman set to marry into the Dutton family; James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr., the oldest nephew and right-hand man of Jacob; Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton, John Dutton Sr.'s dutiful wife; Brian Geraghty as Zane, a loyal ranch foreman; Aminah Nieves Teonna Rainwater, a young woman at a government resident boarding school; Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, a British woman; and Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton.
Timothy Dalton has been cast to play Donald Whitfield, the show's main villain — a “powerful, self-confident man who reeks of wealth and the lack of empathy it requires to attain it." Like other villains in the Yellowstone series, Donald Whitfield is said to be “intimidating and nefarious and is used to getting what he wants.”
1923 is slated to run as a limited series. The official synopsis reads:
“1923 focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness, and prohibition. And an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled beneath the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade.”
The fifth season of Yellowstone, which stars Kevin Costner as John Dutton III, a widowed six-generation patriarch of the Dutton family, is set to debut on Paramount Network on November 13 with a special two-hour event.
1923 is the second spinoff series of Yellowstone. Another prequel show, 1883, premiered on Paramount+ back in 2021 and explored the story of how the Duttons came to own the land that would eventually become the Yellowstone ranch. It was another limited series consisting of 10 episodes and concluded in February of this year.
Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind of both Yellowstone and 1883, has once again spearheaded 1923. In addition to creating the series, he's on board as executive producer alongside John Linson, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, and Ben Richardson.
