As promised, Peacock debuted the first trailer for its upcoming Twisted Metal television series, although it's more of a very brief teaser. Though we only see about 40 seconds of actual footage, the teaser does a good job of setting the tone for the adaptation of the beloved PlayStation video game franchise.

"Ladies and gentlemen, start your engine," series star Anthony Mackie says as he looks directly into the camera. And while fans of the video games were undoubtedly expecting some iconic Rob Zombie bass-thumping rock music, we were instead greeted by Len's "Steal My Sunshine."

It's just one example of the comedic humor that will be present in this version of Twisted Metal. Although Peacock's series is based on the PlayStation video games of the same name, this will be an original take by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith. And while video games are dark in tone and concept, Peacock's series will be "a high-octane action comedy."

Rather than partaking in a vehicular combat tournament, Mackie's character, "a motor-mouthed outsider," is "offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland." Presumably, this package is going to Calypso, the main villain from the video games and host of the Twisted Metal contest. In the video games, Calypso possesses the ability to grant any wish the contest winner desires, no matter what they desire; although, he often punishes the winner with their own wish in some form of dark irony.

Back to the series, Mackie's character will be joined by a "badass axe-wielding car thief" as they race across the wasteland. On this road trip adventure, Mackie will face "savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck."

That deranged clown is none other than Sweet Tooth, played by professional wrestler Samoa Joe and voiced by Will Arnett. We get a brief look at Sweet Tooth in the upcoming series and although it's just a very quick peek, he looks just as menacing in the series as he does in the video games. Other cast members include Stephanie Beatriz as Quiet, Thomas Haden Church as Agent Stone, and Richard Cabral as Loudy.

Twisted Metal will debut exclusively on the Peacock streaming service this summer on July 27th. The season will run for 10 episodes, each 30 minutes in length.
