Ahead of its theatrical release this summer, Universal Pictures has debuted the official trailer for Twisters.
A sequel to the 1996 blockbuster, Twisters offers a current-day take on the tornado action-thriller. The film stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing, Normal People) and Glen Powell (Anyone But You, Top Gun: Maverick) as "opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes."
The original Twister starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton as a group of storm chasers trying to deploy a tornado research device during a severe outbreak in Oklahoma. The sequel feels similar in spirit.
Edgar-Jones feels like the modern version of Helen Hunt. She's a former storm chaser "haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City."
The synopsis teases:
She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.
As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.
Powell's Tyler Owens gives off Jonas Miller vibes, although in this case, he's much more likable offering quotable lines like "If you feel it, chase it!" and "You don't face your fears, you ride them."
The trailer is not shy about revealing some of the movie's more heart-pounding moments, including the final moments where we see twin twisters.
While modernized, Twisters certainly maintains the same tone and feel as the first movie. The 1996 disaster film grossed $495 million worldwide and became the second-highest-grossing film of 1996. It received mostly positive reviews from critics and received Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.
Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and is produced by Oscar® nominee Frank Marshall (Jurassic and Indiana Jones franchises) and by Patrick Crowley (Jurassic and Bourne franchises) with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, writer of the Best Picture nominee The Revenant.
Twisters will be released only in theaters on July 19, 2024.
