Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire! With each passing week, Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar to new heights. The latest feat for the Paramount's blockbuster sequel is surpassing The Avengers at the U.S. box office.
Top Gun: Maverick has now earned a massive $623.8 million in North America, passing Marvel's The Avengers ($623.3 million) to become the ninth-highest grossing film in domestic box office history. Next on the list is Jurassic World at No. 8 with 653.4 million. While industry experts believe there's still enough fuel left in the tank to possibly surpass Jurassic World, and maybe even Titanic at $659 million, it's unlikely to crack the top six.
For those keeping score, the top six highest-grossing domestic films are:
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $936.6 million
- Avengers: Endgame - $853.3 million
- Spider-Man: No Way Home - $804.7 million
- Avatar - $760 million
- Black Panther - $700 million
- Avengers: Infinity War - $678 million
Regardless of where it finishes on the list, it's been an incredible run for Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel, which suffered numerous delays during the pandemic, finally flew into theaters in May, over thirty years after the original. In the time between films, there's been an incredible advancement in military aviation and that undoubtedly allowed for some the incredible aerial cinematography featured in the film.
Overseas, Tom Gun: Maverick has earned another $620 million for a global haul of $1.24 billion. So what's next for the franchise?
Given the film's box office success, it's almost certain we'll get another Top Gun down the line. While nothing official has been announced, actor Miles Teller, who starred as Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, recently revealed he's had talks with Tom Cruise about a follow-up film. While we can think of plenty of ideas for where the franchise could go moving forward, Teller acknowledged that it would ultimately be up to Tom Cruise to move forward with a third film.
