Prime Video laid out its Reacher plans at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25th, and buried in the dates is one of the smartest bits of scheduling I've seen a streamer pull.
Reacher Season 4 premieres August 12th with three episodes, and is then set to run weekly thereafter. The finale lands September 16th.
All eight episodes of Neagley, the new Reacher spin-off, are set to drop on September 16th as well.
Yes, that's the same day. When you finish the Reacher season 4 finale, there's a complete season of a different show in the same world waiting for you.
Engineering Away The Drop-Off
The usual problem with a spin-off is the gap. A show ends, months pass, the audience scatters, and the new series has to win those viewers back. Amazon has removed that gap entirely. No window exists in which a Reacher viewer will be between shows. The weekly rollout does the other half of the job, holding the audience together for five weeks instead of letting them binge and vanish.
Maria Sten has played Frances Neagley since the first season of Reacher. Nick Santora runs both shows, Nicholas Wootton is on the spin-off with him, and Ritchson turns up as a guest. Greyston Holt, Adeline Rudolph, Jasper Jones, Matthew Del Negro, and Damon Herriman round out the rest of the cast.
The setup puts her a long way from Reacher's orbit. Neagley is working as a private investigator in Chicago when a friend from her past dies in what looks to be an accident. She gets eight episodes to find out that it wasn't. Here's how Sten put it at the panel: "What is true for Neagley - which is also true for Reacher - is that we stand up to the big guy if the small guy gets stepped on."
Same ethos, minus the six-foot-five enforcement mechanism.
The panel was called "Reacher's Back and Neagley's In," which tells you exactly how Amazon is positioning this. Neagley has been the one character who could always go toe to toe with Reacher on competence rather than size, so of all the people in that world to spin off, she's the obvious pick.
Why Amazon Is This Confident
Season 3 pulled more than 54 million viewers in 19 days and sat at the top of Nielsen's streaming chart for weeks. At one point it cleared the number two show by close to two billion minutes. The next Prime Video series on that list didn't appear until number 42. For Prime Video, this show is a big part of the platform.
It's been that way from the beginning. The first season did 1.84 billion minutes in its opening weekend back in March 2022, when all eight episodes dropped at once. The second went weekly and still managed 1.7 billion minutes off three episodes. Those are Nielsen minutes, while the 54 million is Amazon counting its own viewers, and the two don't use the same metrics.
Which explains the rest of the announcement. Season 5 has already been greenlit, adapting Make Me, before Season 4 has aired a single episode.
Season 4 adapts Gone Tomorrow. And Lee Child is co-writing a Neagley novel with Yasmin Angoe called Zero Margin, out March 2027, so the character is getting a book as well as a show.
Gone Tomorrow is Child's 13th novel, and it opens with Reacher watching a woman die on a New York subway car, then getting arrested for it. Agnez Mo and Anggun join the cast as the season's antagonists, alongside Marc Blucas, Kevin Corrigan, Kathleen Robertson, Sydelle Noel and Kevin Weisman.
Ritchson is already on the clock for it. "We start shooting on Monday," he said of Season 5 at the panel. "The season's been written. All the scripts are done."
Amazon has scheduled all of this years out. The open question is whether Neagley can carry eight episodes on her own, and we'll find out on September 16th!
Are you going to roll straight from the finale into the spin-off, or does Neagley need to earn it separately? Is the weekly release still the right call?
