Start your engines once again because Twisted Metal is returning for a second season. Season 2 of Peacock's record-breaking television series -- an adaptation of the beloved PlayStation video game franchise -- was confirmed at The Game Awards this week.
"Because of our incredible fans, Twisted Metal is coming back for Season 2 on Peacock," series star and executive producer Anthony Mackie announced during the show. "So everybody get your motor revving because you're going on another ride with John Doe!"
The first season of the show was met with fairly positive reviews from critics, although it was much better received by general audiences. "An enjoyable blast of cartoonishly violent mayhem, Twisted Metal sometimes struggles to flesh out its source material, but ultimately offers an adaptation with surprising depth," the critics' consensus reads.
Developers Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Michael Jonathan Smith took some creative liberties with their adaptation but the first season featured plenty of vehicular combat and references to the games. The first season did a great job of welcoming viewers into the post-apocalyptic world where society collapsed in the early 2000s and people have been living in isolated cities, connected only by delivery drivers (known in this world as "milkmen").
Season 1 stars Anthony Mackie as John Doe, an amnesiac and motor-mouthed delivery driver on a mission to pick up a mysterious package halfway across the country and successfully return it to New San Francisco leader Raven (played by Neve Campbell). Without getting into too many spoilers, the real reason for his mission is to help Raven identify the perfect representative for a vehicular combat tournament.
Calypso's iconic tournament was noticeably absent from the first season, but it will almost certainly be at the forefront of the second season.
“I have to give a Sweet Tooth-sized thank you to our incredible fans — I read every comment and was so blown away by everyone's love, support, and rabid enthusiasm for a paper bag,” showrunner, writer, and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith said in a statement. "We are beyond thankful we get to continue the story of John Doe, Quiet, and Sweet Tooth as they face off against familiar faces and new grim foes in the long-awaited Twisted Metal tournament. The mixtape is made, and I’m thrilled to get back on the road with our stellar cast and crew."
We don't have an official synopsis for Season 2 or a premiere date, but with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes now resolved, production on the highly anticipated second season has now begun.
And yes, Sweet Tooth (voiced by Will Arnett) will be returning.
Season 1 of Twisted Metal is now streaming exclusively on Peacock.
