Variety reports that EuropaCorp and Village Roadshow are partnering up to develop and produce a TV series spin-off of Lucy, the hit action movie that starred Scarlett Johansson.
In the film, the Black Widow star played a woman, Lucy, who unlocked superhero-level abilities through an accidental drug overdose. Those drugs allow the human brain, which, according to the movie, usually only operates at 10% of its ability, to work to its full capacity.
It's a novel concept, but one that didn't receive the warmest of responses from critics who slated the nonsensical plot. Despite that, it was rated "Fresh" and the action and Johansson's performance were praised. Crucially, the 2014 movie grossed over $463 million, more than eleven times its $39 million budget.
Morgan Freeman is in advanced talks to join the cast of the untitled project, reprising his role as Professor Norman in the show.
While this Lucy spin-off is being developed by EuropaCorp, there's no real mention of filmmaker Luc Besson's involvement with the TV show (he founded the company). Rape charges against the director were dropped earlier this year, so only time will tell whether he ends up taking an active role in the show behind the camera.
We do, however, know that EuropaCorp is looking to expand its many franchises with small screen spinoffs like this one.
Will Johansson be involved? Is Lucy being recast or are we getting a new character? Where will the show air/stream? Those are questions we don't currently have any answers for, so it's clearly still early days for this one.
For Lucy fans, though, this is definitely exciting, and fans of the movie and the MCU are already suggesting Florence Pugh should take over the role, just as she has with Black Widow. We don't bank on that happening, but whoever does land a starring role in this series has the opportunity to put themselves on the map in what could be a huge new action franchise on TV.
